Natural Resource Development
Our state is blessed with vast natural resources which belong to all
Alaskans. Such ownership compels responsible development. So to
preserve the priceless beauty which Alaskans cherish, development of
our resources must be done in an environmentally responsible manner.
We must:
- Open ANWR responsibly now before a global
energy crisis forces precipitous development. As gas prices increase,
Americans will demand it be opened.
- Support the development of mining and resource development such as Pebble Mine provided it is environmentally sound.
The Economy
The American economy is the greatest economic
engine the world has ever known. We are more modernized, more efficient
and more productive because we are innovative and hard working.
America’s engine has stalled however due to a devalued dollar and the
outsourcing of good paying middle-class jobs to foreign countries.
We must:
- Stop deficit spending.
- Adopt policies that ensure free and fair trade.
- Make the Bush tax cuts permanent. A government big enough to give you everything is also big enough to take it all away.
- Grow our middle class through education and training to
create better paying jobs in those industries in which America has a
comparative advantage (i.e. those industries which American’s do best:
heavy equipment, entertainment and finance).
- Strengthen the family, as strong families lead to economic prosperity.
Restoring Trust in Our Government
Over eighty percent of
Americans hold Congress in contempt. It's no wonder, given that
nationally there are 2,200 cases of corruption by public officials
currently being investigated.
Elected officials must:
- Earn trust, not buy it with poorly conceived government spending, which is never openly debated in the appropriations process.
- Reform the current method of financing campaigns to level the playing field for challengers.
- Support a constitutional amendment imposing Congressional term limits.
Earmark Reform
The process of earmarks cast a deep shadow over local projects which
might otherwise have merit. Earmark reform does not mean that good
projects go away. Rather, it means that projects have to be subjected
to more scrutiny.
We must:
- Make the appropriations process transparent.
- Eliminate earmarks that are wasteful, unethical or inappropriate for the federal role.
Preserving Our God-Given Rights
The architects of the Patriot Act gave the enemies of freedom
everything they could possibly have asked for. The rights of a US
citizen were rightly the envy of the world once, and our country's
ability to protect its citizens has long been unmatched. Surely we can
restore these rights and protect our way of life without the loss of
the very freedoms that ensure that way of life.
We must:
- Protect our 2nd Amendment rights against infringement by the courts and others.
- Recognize the inalienable human right to be born alive.
- Return to the people the freedoms we've lost under the Patriot Act.
- Rethink such concepts as the Real ID Act, giving more emphasis to preserving freedoms.
Foreign Policy
I support a strong military to provide for our national defense.
However, the United States should not be the world’s policeman. I would
not have voted to send our troops to Iraq.
Illegal Immigration
The freedoms and opportunities we enjoy as Americans make our nation a magnet that attracts people from all over the world.
Who can blame people for coming here regardless of the risks? Even so,
we must stop illegal immigration by:
- Securing our borders.
- Removing the incentives that encourage illegal immigration,
in particular birthright citizenship for children of illegal
immigrants.
- Strictly enforce existing immigration laws.
- Rejecting amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Health Care
We have the most technologically advanced health
care system in the world, but it is unaffordable to many Americans.
Health insurance premiums increased 87% between 2000 and 2006 and
average health care costs have grown from $356 in 1970 to $6,697.00 in
2006.
We must:
- Improve access to health care, especially for Medicare recipients, including allowing retirees to opt out of Medicare.
- Bring a business approach to Medicare costs.
- Remove the disconnect between the third-party payor and the consumer.
- Permit individuals to fully deduct the cost of their health care, including premiums.
Education
As a parent who helpd home-school our children, I believe parents bear
the ultimate responsibility for education. The role of government is to
provide resources to aid in this effort. While I believe education
should primarily be left up to the states, I recognize there are some
areas where the federal government should act to improve both the
quality of and access to an education.
We should:
- Enact a school voucher system.
- Expand the student loan program.
- Encourage, coordinate and expand online accreditation for college courses.
- Investigate methods for reducing the costs of college education.
Social Security
What began as a well intentioned program has become doomed to failure
by continual mismanagement by our government. Public “trust funds” can
be successful, as evidenced by our own Permanent Fund. However,
Congress has continuously raided the Social Security “trust fund” since
its inception to fund other government programs. The fund is “out of
trust” and will be unable to pay the next generation of retirees.
We must:
- Stop paying for other government entitlement
programs out of Social Security and use the General Fund to pay for
those programs.
- Maintain Social Security benefits for those near, at, and past retirement age.
- Stop penalizing Social Security recipients who choose to work beyond retirement age.
- Allow younger employees to contribute a portion of their Social Security taxes to a Personal Retirement Account (PRA).
